Guam was devastated by Typhoon Mawar in 2023, but the Guam Football Association (GFA) has since reestablished football infrastructure to enable the beautiful game to flourish in the western Pacific island nation.

Within the TDS framework, the GFA National Training Centre is giving Guam’s elite young talent the opportunity to develop as one of the 10 FIFA Talent Academies currently operating with an active FIFA Talent Coach within the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).

“If you had asked me after my first visit to Guam when would Guam be ready for recognition as a FIFA Talent Academy with a milestone event, I would have been very sceptical,” said FIFA High-Performance Specialist and TDS Lead in Guam Eric Abrams in a speech at the milestone event.

“Two years later, we are witnessing a historic day for Guam football as the GFA National Academy Programme complies with FIFA Talent Academy standards, on and off the pitch.”

The event was attended by Guam senators and GFA representatives including President Valentino San Gil, who also spoke to the participants. They included some of the girls and boys benefitting from the top-level coaching at the FIFA Talent Academy, who have the opportunity to play against the very best of their peers among Guam’s population of just 170,000.

“This milestone is a proud and deeply meaningful moment for the Guam Football Association and for the future of football on our island. We sincerely thank FIFA for believing in Guam and supporting our vision of creating greater opportunities for our young athletes,” said GFA President San Gil.

“I also extend my heartfelt appreciation to our GFA coaches for their dedication and to the parents and families whose encouragement makes this journey possible. Most importantly, I want to thank our players. Your commitment, discipline and passion are the heart of this academy. This milestone belongs to you, and we are incredibly proud of each of you. We look forward to supporting you as you continue to learn, grow and pursue your dreams – both on and off the field.”

Launched only in November 2024, the FIFA Talent Academy has made great strides in reinforcing football’s foundations on the island. More than 200 youngsters took part in trials for one of four teams – U-15 boys, U-15 girls, U-13 boys and U-13 girls – at the academy in early 2026 with a new U-13 pre-academy programme featuring two weekly training sessions implemented in August this year.

The GFA has built partnerships with schools to improve access to football for girls and boys across the territory, and with FIFA giving more opportunities to its 211 Member Associations (MA) to perform on the global stage, Abrams said a continued collaborative effort could see a Guam national team break new ground in the future.

“FIFA’ s support through funding and expertise in the TDS aims to raise the global competitiveness of every MA even for small MAs like Guam. And that it’s possible for smaller MAs to enter the global scene of football is proven by the last FIFA World Cup, where for the first time with 48 countries qualified, small MAs like Cabo Verde, Haiti and Curaçao made games even against the top football countries very balanced,” he explained before an exhibition game and awards presentation rounded off the event.

“Let this high day of Guam football be an incentive to further cross boundaries and really give every Guam potential talent a real chance to reach their potential.”
